NEW YORK – AUGUST 1, 2022 – Queensboro FC II is one of the many new teams to make their debut in the United Premier Soccer League this season. The UPSL is the largest pro development league in North America. The club has turned heads after not only making it all the way to the national finals but for sporting one of the youngest teams the competition has ever seen in the UPSL National Finals.
The club entered the 2022 UPSL season with their USL A squad, a team with an average age of 17, looking to introduce a new challenge to their players, as well as prepare them to play against older, more experienced competition. With opponents ranging from D1 athletes to former professionals, head coach Diego Gomez feels that the league has met their expectations.
“We are happy with the platform that UPSL has proven so far to develop our players and the direction that the league is taking in trying to set very professional minimum standards. Also other Pro academies are joining the league like LA Galaxy and Philly Union. So, it is calling the attention of other pro teams like ours for developing players” stated Gomez on if he wishes to continue playing in the league.
Yan Skwara, commissioner of the UPSL explains “We are excited to see a club like Queensboro FC not only participate in the UPSL, but also advance this far into our National Finals competition in their first year. They are extremely professional organization and having Queensboro FC II in the UPSL only raises the level of competition for all involved. We are excited to welcome them to Columbus this week for the UPSL National Finals”.
The regular season saw Queensboro dominate the league, conceding the least amount of goals and only dropping points twice. They showed no sign of slowing down in their playoff run, scoring 17 goals in 5 games and shutting out last year’s runners up, Chicago Nation FC, in the Regional Finals.
Overall Coach Gomez is ecstatic with the progress made by his team. “We were first looking to see players grow and develop faster than we saw the previous year. And secondly in the competitive aspect it was just to make to conference playoffs. I am very proud of the team. By far they exceeded my expectations. And we are going to try to continue to do so” stated Gomez.
Queensboro will go on to play Beaman United FC on August 5th in the National Semi-Finals. Beaman, also in their first UPSL season, has had a high scoring campaign led by many experienced players and even former pros. It will be a tough matchup, but Queensboro FC will enter this game with the same winning mentality they have had all season.
